Robson Defeated in First Round

British Laura Robson was defeated in her ladies’ singles first round match by Francesca Schiavone this afternoon at Wimbledon, despite injury holding the Italian player back.

Robson seemed ahead in the first set, winning 6-2 in part due to the huge powerful serve that has seen her rise from the Girls’ Championship to 97th in the world.

Schiavone, 24th seed and 2010 French Open champion, was forced to leave the court at one point, returning to begin the second set, which she won 6-4.

The third set began well for Schiavone, gaining a 5-1 lead. Robson broke serve to reach 5-4, but despite some absolutely blinding ace shots could not hold onto her advantage and was eventually defeated in the last set 6-4.

Schiavone will play the winner of Hercog v Pliskova in the second round, and judging by her mental stamina is determined to go further in this year’s championship.
