Boxing Day 2011 has seen the high street hit by what some have claimed to be the biggest sales rush in history. Shoppers seemed to make a speedy recovery from yesterday’s food and alcohol binge, queuing and ready to do battle with fellow bargain-hunters from the early hours of this morning. For some, the festivities ended on Christmas Day itself, with queues outside London’s Selfridges forming from 10.30 last night. Today, the department store saw its busiest sale so far, raking in a jaw-dropping £1.3m in a single hour this morning.

Liverpool One is also predicted to see its share of the sales rush, with estate director Chris Bliss estimating around 125,000 shoppers visiting the centre to take advantages of slashed prices. Mild weather and pinched purses have been blamed for the boom in Boxing Day sale crowds.

Though has it gone too far? Each year more and more stores open on Boxing Day, and London queues have shown that the sales have begun to take over the Big Day itself. Indeed, some are even delaying gift-giving until Boxing Day, halving the cost of their Christmas shopping. We need to be reminded that Christmas isn’t about the presents, much less fighting tooth and nail in Next at 6am the day after.
