Colour Vision has beaten Opinion Poll to win the Ascot Gold Cup and lead home a Godolphin 1-2. A stewards’ enquiry was very quickly called however, but the result was never in any real doubt. The winner was half a length clear at the post, despite bumping into Opinion Poll twice close home, and was staying on best at the end.

A very steady early gallop was set by Gulf Of Naples, with Dettori never very far away. A number of runners failed to settle in these crucial early stages and as the pace increased as the race went on, the runners became more stretched out behind.

Colour Vision began to tackle Gulf Of Naples (who eventually rallied gamely to finish fourth) as Opinion Poll, last year’s runner-up, made relentless headway. Mahmood Al Zarooni’s horse actually took over inside the furlong, but had to settle for second again as Saeed bin Suroor’s Colour Vision fought back gamely to win. Saddler’s Rock came third on unsuitable going and should be considered next season if he’s still in training.

Odds-on favourite Fame And Glory was disappointing and finished well down the field, despite travelling well into the home straight.
