A disused underground railway tunnel in south Liverpool, which forms part of the old Liverpool Overhead Railway, has partially collapsed. The incident happened this morning at about 11.30am in Dingle, Toxteth.

A business which works in the old tunnel reported the collapse and emergency services were at the scene on Park Road for some time. There are no reports of any injuries or people missing and it is not thought that anyone was inside at the time of the collapse. The Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service Search and Rescue team was, however, immediately put on standby. A building surveyor was also asked to the scene.

The area surrounding the old Dingle station was soon cordoned off. Park Road, as well as its junctions with Dingle Lane and Keddleston Street, was closed.

Some nearby homes were also evacuated as a precaution and bus routes were subject to diversions.

Park Road re-opened mid-afternoon and traffic in both directions has begun to clear.
