After a huge public vote by readers, the winners of The Skinny magazine’s annual survey of the best food and drink venues in Liverpool and Manchester have recently been announced.

The Skinny is the Northwest’s top culture and listings magazine, reporting on all things cultural. Readers were asked to vote for their favourite venues in Manchester and Liverpool, each graded into a variety of different categories. The survey is the second to be undertaken, after its initial introduction in 2013, and saw a massive number of votes cast for people who wanted to see their favourite restaurant or café at the top of its category. Although there was some seriously stiff competition from the venues of Manchester, Liverpool took the top spot in five out of the eight possible categories in the results of the survey, with the delicious talent of some of the city’s smaller venues being showcased.

Not only did the city win categories such as best Café and the best place to go for a date, but it has also been recognised for having the best international cuisine. (With the city having previously held the title of the Capital of Culture I would be surprised if we hadn’t won that one!)

The city was also the runner up in the category of best local beer in the form of Liverpool Organic Brew, whilst the popular Leaf and Bold Street Coffee were both in the top five in the best café category. Many of Liverpool’s smaller independent venues have placed highly in the survey; it looks like we should all be ditching Starbucks and heading to support Liverpool’s local businesses.
