You may have noticed that the old Cath Kidston shop on School Lane has recently undergone a transformation. In its place sits a brand new and exciting shop, CASS Art. Having stores in London, Glasgow and Bristol, they have recently opened a Liverpool branch, bringing the experience and knowledge that comes with CASS Art into our own art-filled city. With Mark Cass at the centre of everything, CASS Art is a very family run business, recently celebrating its 30th anniversary, with Mark’s family having been involved in the art world for a long period of time.
CASS Art’s aim is quite simply to make art accessible to everyone, something which is growing increasingly difficult with the price of materials and which is unfortunately leading to a decline in the range and variety of art produced, with many believing that it is only the rich who can afford to be involved in the art world. CASS ART is here to tell you otherwise. They firmly believe that art should be available to all, old and young alike, providing for a range of customers from complete beginners to professional artists and everything in between. The store stocks a wide variety of materials from colouring books and children’s craft materials through to professional quality paint and even FIMO modelling clay, with just about anything you could ask for all being available at extremely reasonable prices. The store also provides a wide range of materials for architecture students, so no more hunting around for specialist modelling kits, CASS Art have a section just for you. Additionally, all of the staff are practising artists themselves, so they can advise on just about any specialism.
Whilst CASS Art sell a range of branded products, they also stock their own brand, CASS Art materials, currently standing at 8% of their total stock, although this is hopefully to rise to 20%. Whilst these may not be of professional standard, they are certainly extremely good value, with the sketchbooks in particular being of a fantastic student quality, and with fantastic student prices to match. Speaking of students, the store also offers a student card, which gives you 15% off all prices, making some items an absolute steal. CASS Art is not about profit, it simply aims to allow everyone a chance at developing a creative outlet and enjoying art for themselves. In addition the store offers 10% off for life for all art teachers. They also run a student programme, details of which are available on the CASS Art website, with the business currently recruiting student ambassadors across the country. Applications are open so take a look!
CASS also occasionally runs in-store workshops with practising artists such as Jake Spicer, with impromptu workshops and in-store demonstrations from local established artists. CASS Art truly is a testament to what hard work can achieve, building networks in the community not only with local artists but also with other long-established art shops such as Rennies, well known for its combined art shop and gallery on Bold Street. The store also offers a price promise, meaning that if you can find identical materials cheaper anywhere else in the UK in-store or online (excluding eBay and Amazon) then they will match the price. You can’t say fairer than that!
For Architecture students, University of Liverpool’s very own ArtSoc and for any other art enthusiasts, no matter what level, the store is a dream come true; it will be very easy to while away a couple of hours in there!
