Singles out 16th October:

Perfect – One Direction

Reviewing a single by an artist such as One Direction can often prove difficult, as it is very tempting to immediately dismiss the track without giving it the attention it deserves. Second single for upcoming album Made in the A.M., Perfect, is a surprisingly catchy pop song that is reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s Style, though it never manages to reach the lofty heights of pop perfection that has become effortless for Harry’s old flame. It may not have the hook of previous single Drag Me Down, but Perfect is a fine example of why One Direction remain the world’s biggest boy-band right now.

Second Hand Heart – Ben Haenow feat. Kelly Clarkson

Last year’s X-Factor winner Ben Haenow has finally emerged from the darkness and released the first single for his upcoming self-titled album, called Second Hand Heart. The track sees Ben team up with American pop singer (and former American Idol winner) Kelly Clarkson, and he couldn’t have picked a more suited singer for the ‘safe pop’ sound of Second Hand Heart. The track is catchy in its own simple way, and it’s surprisingly better than we had anticipated (due to the track record of previous winners) but at the end of the day it’s still very mediocre, and it’s likely to be outshone by runner-up Fleur East’s début single which launches later in the year.

Be Right There – Diplo & Sleepy Tom

American DJ and record producer Diplo has an impressive history: he’s worked with the industry’s biggest artists such as Britney Spears, Madonna, Beyonce, and Justin Bieber, and has been making music for over thirteen years. Off the back of this, one would expect a certain standard of music from the dinosaur enthusiast’s latest track, especially after his work on the fantastic tracks Lean On and Where Are You Now earlier this year, but unfortunately Be Right There fails to deliver. Its generic sound may not be considered such a strong criticism if it was released by any other artist, but from Diplo we expected so much more.

Track of the Week – Turn the Music Louder (Rumble) – KDA feat. Tinie Tempah and Katy B

It’s fair to say that as début singles go, Turn the Music Louder by London house producer KDA is a strong effort. The track’s hook is massively infectious, and the inclusion of big names Tinie Tempah and Katy B help make the song the smash hit that it’s destined to become, with Katy’s soaring vocals taking the limelight. Expect this to remain fixed on radio and club playlists for the foreseeable future.
