The anticipated 88th Academy Awards took place last Sunday. It wasn’t only Leo’s ‘will he, won’t he’ excitement but also that of the fashion choices. Here are some of the trends that stood out from the red carpet…

Reese-Witherspoon-Oscars-2016-Red-Carpet-Vogue-28Feb16-Rex_b_426x639Tina Fey’s and Reese Witherspoon’s dresses were pretty much the same dress- very elegant yet very similar, always a fashion faux-pas. Naomi Watts’ Armani Prive sequin, mermaid-like number on the other hand, makes the 47 year old look amazing.

The Deep V Neck

The deep V neck is always elegant, done in the right way. These ladies definitely show us how to do it. Another Armani Prive gown is Cate Blanchett’s- the mint green, flower embellished dress was a real winner and surprised many critics.

The strapless dress is a trend that will always come back into fashion. Alicia Vikander’s yellow Louis Vuitton was a great choice. Despite being compared to ‘Beauty and the Beast’s Belle’ she took home the Best Supporting Actress as well as many fashion nods from the critics. Leonardo DiCaprio is almost outshined by Kate Winslet’s Ralph Lauren dress- almost but not quite!

The Controversial Ones

In the case of Lady Gaga we always expect something extravagant. This custom made Brandon Maxwell was quite calm compared to some of her usual fashion choices. In this case, the dramatic white jumpsuit makes her look very Marilyn Monroe, much like her 1920s Hollywood glam hair and the multi-million dollar earrings. Overall: a win in my eyes. For Heidi Klum on the other hand, a woman who normally can do no wrong when it comes to fashion, the lilac bridesmaid dress just isn’t doing it for me. I love a little bit of chiffon as much as the next person but the puffy sleeve and wrong colour choice just lets this down.

What do you think?
