Lights, carols, and podium speeches – the festive season is here.

On Thursday, 17th November, the Liverpool Guild of Students and the university joined to announce the beginning of the festive season in traditional style.

The lights were switched on by Professor Janet Beer, Vice-President of the University of Liverpool, and Sean Turner, President of the Liverpool Guild of Students.

The switch-on event featured a live choir singing Christmas carols, a hot drink stall and a Beer Festival inside the Guild Courtyard. Professor Janet Beer joked that she’d like to thank Sean Turner for naming the Festival after her.

The switch-on involved decorating two existing trees in University Square with fairy lights, with no Christmas tree to be seen.

The Guild’s Beer Festival will run until midnight on Saturday, offering a wide range of locally-brewed beers and ciders.
