The English National Ballet returns to the Liverpool Empire theatre on the 29th of November to enact the Christmas classic “The Nutcracker”, a story detailing the adventures of Clara and her magical toy nutcracker.
Based on the original story “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice” by ET Hoffman, the tale begins in Edwardian London at a Christmas party where Clara is given the Nutcracker by her Godfather, Drosselmeyer. The nutcracker is taken and broken by her brother Fritz, overcome with jealousy at his sister’s wonderful new toy; heartbroken, Clara attempts to fix her beloved toy and leaves him in a make-shift bed underneath the Christmas tree.
However, Clara, worried about her nutcracker, sneaks downstairs in the night to check on him and falls asleep with him in her arms. At the stroke of midnight Clara awakes to find that all the toys in the house have come to life and becomes surrounded by large, army clad mice who battle the toys led by the nutcracker. From there, Clara and her Nutcracker go on an epic adventure, discovering the ‘land of sweets’ where the notorious ‘dance of the sugar plum fairies’ takes place among several other charmingly elegant dances.
Featuring both The English National Ballet and the Philharmonic Orchestra, “The Nutcracker” brings to life the magnificent music of Tchaikovsky in a thrilling yet graceful performance.
It is an absolute must-see this Christmas, desribed as “dazzling” by The Daily Telegraph and “Christmas card perfect” by The Guardian; it is surely a performance not to be missed!
Performances run from Tuesday 29th of November to Saturday 3rd of December in the Liverpool Empire Theatre.
