Founded in 2014, the Liverpuddly Cannons are finally celebrating their first year as part of the Liverpool Guild of Students. Named after J. K Rowling’s fantastical Chudley Cannons, the Liverpuddly Cannons are firmly making their mark in the world of Quidditch.

Created by students for students, Liverpool’s quidditch team are not the only ones taking part in this sporting phenomenon sweeping the country. With a Quidditch Premier League starting in May 2017 and the UK recently coming 3rd in the Quidditch World Cup, it is clear that this game is not a joke. Or for the faint hearted…

The game of quaffles, beaters and snitches is no longer a figment of our imagination, the reality of beaters throwing quaffles (dodgeballs) and chasers following snitches (an attachment on designated player) can be found on a field not so far from home.

Although the Liverpuddly Cannons have their feet firmly on the ground, there is no denying this team is off to a flying start. They have recently taken part in a Quidditch UK regional tournament, only narrowly missing out at a chance at the BQC (British Quidditch Cup). Liverpuddly Cannons finished 17th, the top 16 securing qualification. No doubt this is a milestone these Liverpool Muggles will be reaching this time next year.

After receiving some funding for new goal hoops, the team are starting to look ready to face the big guns, starting with a couple of ‘Tri-Wizard’ friendlies against Preston Poltergeists and Manchester Manticores on Saturday 3rd December.

The Cannons think themselves as a family, one that is very proud of their gender inclusive sport. Unlike most sports at university, the Liverpuddly Cannons team show the less daunting, more relaxed way to keep fit and have a laugh from semester to semester. The team are well aware of how hard it is to juggle uni, sport and socialising, yet playing quidditch gives them the opportunity to balance all 3.

Quidditch training runs Wednesdays 2-4 and Saturdays from 12:30 so there are plenty of chances to get involved. There are no ties or contracts with this team, so there is no need to worry about commitment or even experience as anyone from any sporting background is more than welcome.

Don’t hesitate to get involved as The Liverpuddly Cannons play and train all year round, no need to wait until next semester! Prices start at £2 per session or £15 for the whole year, your first session free.
