Varsity is the leading event of the university sporting calendar: each year the University of Liverpool and John Moores go head-to-head to compete for the Varsity Cup. The two biggest universities in Liverpool have been competing in the fixtures since 1993, but organisers say 2017 will be “the biggest and best year to date.”
This year, American Football are headlining Varsity – since both universities are in League 2, it’s set to be an interesting finale.
Events kick off with the Curtain Raiser on Monday 27th. This event will see the swimming teams diving into action at the University of Liverpool Sports Hall. This is the only free-entry Varsity event, beginning at 7 pm.
UoL swimmer Adam Jarvis said: “tonight will be really interesting. The UoL committee has put a lot of work into the event, and we’re going to try and raise the roof with this opening event. JMU has a solid team this year, but I have faith in our squad to bring the trophy home once again.”
The Headliners on Tuesday 28th include Netball at 6 pm and Basketball at 8 pm. These events will take place at the Greenbank Academy. Entry costs £5 – but, as if to help you get into the spirit of Americana, this includes a t-shirt, hot-dog, popcorn and candy floss.
Wednesday 29th is the main day; all sporting events will begin at 1 pm.
The 2017 main event is American Football, kicking off at 4 pm at the Fortress Wyncote Ground in L18. Liverpool will wait with baited breath to see if the Raptors can bring home the Cup for the University of Liverpool.
