Whether you’re fresh out of completing your A levels or returning to the world of higher education and longing for your status as a University student to begin, the wait is almost over, as the biggest social event for first years is fast approaching – Freshers’ Week.

Commencing Sunday 17 September, the Liverpool Guild of Students – the award winning Student’s Union for the University of Liverpool, will be hosting a week full of events, deals and information in order to create a Freshers’ week that is appealing to all.

From guest appearances to quiz nights, film screenings to banquets, Welcome 2017 is a great introduction to University has to offer during your time in Liverpool.

Sunday 17/09/2017 – Welcome Party: Hot Dub Machine


Kicking off Freshers’ Week at the Guild is this years Welcome Party. From 9pm to 1am, a DJ set from the World’s first time travelling DJ -Hot Dub, aka Tom Loud will be underway, alongside fun fair stalls, and even crazy golf! From sold-out shows to festival performances at Coachella and Reading and Leeds Festival, the Hot Dub Time Machine set is not one to miss. So why not jump on a free bus from your accommodation and start the week off with a bang, meeting freshers not just from your halls!

Monday 18/09/2017 –Welcome Film: Up

If you’re interested in easing into your Freshers experience, why not venture to the Guild’s cinema room for a screening of the Disney Pixar classic Up? Released in 2009, you’re welcome to relive Carl and Russell’s journey to the South America wilderness from 7pm-9pm, which gives you enough time to get changed and head back for the Guild Welcome Club Night.

Monday 18/09/2017 –Welcome Club Night: Craig Charles Funk & Soul

From the cobbles of Coronation Street to the floor of Mountford Hall, Craig Charles is best known for his role as Lloyd Mullaney from Corrie, or if you’re a sci-fi sitcom fan, Dave Lister from Red Dwarf. From 2002, Charles has hosted The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show on BBC Radio, which has since been adapted into a DJ set, which has performed at numerous venues such as the Smithdown Road Festival and Liverpool International Music Festival. From 11pm to 3am, the Guild will transform into a night of pure funk and soul, guaranteed to be filled with classic tracks and new hits.

Tuesday 19/09/2017 – Welcoming Comedy: Russell Kane

Fancy yourself a bit of comedy? Award-winning Comedian Russell Kane is set to host an evening of laughter in Mountford Hall, also featuring appearances from Kelly Convey and Elliot Steel. Making appearances on the likes of Live at the Apollo and Celebrity Mastermind, as well as winning the Edinburgh Comedy award in 2010, Kane is sure to have you in stitches with his stand-up repertoire. From 7pm to 10pm, for only £8 in advance (£10 on the door), an evening filled with award winning stand-up is a must to attend.

Wednesday 20/09/2017 – Welcome Banquet: Game of Thrones


Winter is here, it’s time to journey to Westeros. Whether you’re a die-hard Game of Thrones fan or have a hearty appetite fit for a King, the Welcome Banquet will not disappoint. With a guest appearance from legendary actor and Game of Thrones alumni James Cosmo – aka Lord Commander Mormont, the evening will undoubtedly quench your GoT thirst, post the Season 7 finale. Cosmo is also well known for appearing in the iconic films Braveheart and Trainspotting, as well as being a Celebrity Big Brother finalist earlier this year. Fancy dress is encouraged for the event, which is from 7pm to 11pm, so feel free to join the Watch or drape yourself in Lannister attire!

Thursday 21/09/2017 – Welcome Fair


From 10am-3pm, explore a variety of stalls and soak up your new student lifestyle. With societies ranging from Academic to Affecting Change, Celebrating Faith and Culture to Performing Arts and Student Media, you will be spoiled for choice, as each society stall will offer something new. Also well known for its freebies, you may want to grab a bag, as you’ll likely be leaving with tonnes of goodies.

Thursday 21/09/2017 –Welcome Quiz: Best of the Best

Bring your flatmates and your general knowledge for the Guilds annual freshers quiz night! Covering topics from Harry Potter, Friends and Star Wars to name a few, you’re in for a night of laughs, trivia and competitiveness. Set to spin the wheel for six interactive rounds, your teams will be put to the test, with the chance to bag some big prizes. If you’re confident in your popular themes, venture to the Guild at 7pm (Quiz begins at 8), with the event concluding at 11pm.

Thursday 21/09/2017 –Welcome Trips: Shiverpool


With the company mantra ‘We Scare Because We Care’, you’re sure to leave spooked and with your spine tingling, after completing the theatrical ghost and history Shiverpool tour. Multi-award winning and a fun way of experiencing the city, you’ll hear creepy ghost stories, learn about Liverpool mysteries, and hopefully meet some great people! Taking place from the dark hours of 9pm to 11pm, Shiverpool is a haunting and hilarious experience that you will not want to miss.

Friday 22/09/2017 – Welcome BierKeller: Amazing Bavarian Stompers

Currently resident at the famous Leeds Bierkeller, the Amazing Bavarian Stompers are heading to Liverpool for a night of beer swilling, cheap pints and dancing! As the first British comedy oompah band to appear at a major German bier festival, you’re in for an evening of enthusiasm and infectious German culture, from 6pm to 1am. Not to mention the German beer, with a returnable £5 deposit per stein!

Saturday 23/09/2017 – Welcome Club Night: Blazin’ Squad and Love Islands’ Marcel Beach Party


PAGING DOCTOR MARCELLLLLLLLLL!!! If you’re familiar with this summers most popular reality show, then there’s no way you’ll want to miss a chance to see Marcel Somerville at the Guilds Welcome Club Night! Transforming into its very own Love Island spin-off, this year’s Love Island finalist will be making a trip to Liverpool – and not just to visit his new scouse beauty. Stopping by Mountford Hall, Marcel will be flip reversin’ it from 11pm – 1am, with doors opening at 9pm. So if you’re not to busy getting a text or having your every move narrated by a Scottish comedian, get down to the Guild!

Sunday 24/09/2017 – Welcome Tour: St George’s Hall

As one of the cities most iconic buildings, St George’s home is renowned for its exhibitions, history, tours and stunning rooms available for hire – you can’t come to Liverpool and not visit it. The Grade 1 listed building will allow you to discover unseen places, such as the dark corridors above The Great Hall and the recently discovered lost tunnel. Used as a filming location for the 2016 fantasy film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, you’re invited to a Freshers’ cool down from 10.30am to 12pm, which guarantees a bit of culture and a lot of exploring.
