After negotiations with Arriva Liverpool, newly elected Guild President Rory Hughes has delivered on his campaign promise to negotiate cheaper bus passes for students. Starting this September, the Arriva academic year bus pass will be £325, down from the £380 it has been in previous years – a 15% reduction!

In a blog post on the Guild website, Rory thanked the ‘Metro Mayor’s office and, in particular, Councillor Liam Robinson and Merseytravel’ for their help in the negations.

While this is good news for students in Liverpool, it is still considerably higher than a lot of student bus passes in the country which Rory acknowledges in his post. For instance in Manchester you can purchase a ‘unirider’ ticket from Stagecoach for £235 which will see you through the academic year. And in York, First Bus have a similar pass for only £200.

But an extra 55 quid in your pocket can’t be a bad thing so students can consider this a victory overall, perhaps just a smaller one than some would have liked.
