Yesterday afternoon the UoL Jewish Society held a vigil on University Square for the victims of the Saturday shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. There were around forty in attendance, including many students and lecturers.
Representatives of the society and Liverpool’s Jewish community lit eleven candles, each in honour of one of the victims. Afterwards Rabbi Shmuli Brown and some students recited prayers in Hebrew and English as well as singing Hebrew songs.
The event was promoted by some university societies, including the UoL Labour Students and Young Conservatives. Rabbi Shmuli concluded the vigil with some words about the importance of togetherness and reaching out to others, expressing his appreciation for the amount of support shown for the Jewish community on the rainy afternoon.
