Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a phenomenal dark twist on the original nineties sitcom Sabrina The Teenage Witch, with witches, demons, warlocks and the Dark Lord. From the producers of Riverdale, this is by far a better show. A half-witch, half-mortal teenager faces the impossible challenge of balancing two worlds. Sabrina Spellman is approaching her sixteenth birthday when she must choose between a mortal life, a witch life, or maybe a there is a compromise between the two.

The Netflix Original has a completely refreshing take on the show Sabrina the Teenage Witch, moving far away from the sit-com approach. ‘Chilling Adventures’ is an appropriate name as the show has a dark twist which focuses more upon the powerful magical world. Power and freedom are common themes throughout the show as Sabrina must choose one or the other, deciding whether to sign the Book of the Beast.  If she chooses to do so, she will give up her freedom to the Dark Lord himself.

The character Sabrina Spellman is played magnificently by Kiernan Shipka. Sabrina is neither fully witch nor fully mortal, meaning she still maintains close ties to the mortal world through her boyfriend Harvey Kinkle and her close friends. Sabrina seems unwilling to sacrifice her friendships and relationships, yet desperately wants to attend the Academy of Unseen Arts. Rather than focusing upon teen drama like Riverdale, it takes a more mature approach as Sabrina and her friends tackle timely issues such as misogyny and bullying. My only qualm is that Salem the cat does not talk like he did in the original sitcom.

Following the success of season one, I have high hopes for season two as long as it remains distinct from Riverdale.
