Going out for brunch is a part of many students’ weekly social agenda. We’ve tasted and reviewed the key brunch spots around Smithdown Road, one of the University’s bustling student areas, to provide you with some of the best destinations for a student-friendly meal.

The Tavern

621 Smithdown Road

Situated a little further away, The Tavern is well-known across Liverpool for its generous portions which don’t scrimp on quality. The vast menu means there is something for everyone with unlimited tea and coffee served throughout. With quirky décor and large tables, The Tavern is perfect for a large group of friends. Watch out for a long wait for a table at weekends- a midweek visit is best.

Must try: The American

Naked Lunch

431 Smithdown Road

This small, friendly café boasts some of Smithdown’s best coffee. Mismatched tables and chairs give it a homely feel, and the service is quick. Charming artwork and fairy lights add to the feel of the café. The food all tastes fresh, unique and healthy, with twists on favourites such as homemade hashbrowns. The place is transformed at night as live music is often played and cocktails are served.

Must try: The Withnail

349 Smithdown Road

A staple for many students, Oro is situated in the middle of Smithdown road, attracting many with their large portions. With a menu suitable for vegans and vegetarians, Oro is cheap and cheerful, offering a 20% student discount midweek. There is outdoor seating which catches the sun in summer time.

Must try: Mediterranean breakfast

371 Smithdown Road

At a slightly higher price, Belzan has a luxurious feel. The interior contrasts with the streets of Smithdown and makes the experience feel a real treat. The ingredients are fresh and of good quality, and the menu gives the option to add plenty of extras. There is an extensive list of lattés, including Macha and Beetroot, ensuring new flavours with each visit. Belzan even offers a bottomless prosecco brunch for £25 a head – perfect for a birthday celebration!

Must try: Shakshuka (Moroccan baked eggs)

Portland Street 358

358 Smithdown Road

Situated opposite the Tavern, Portland Sq is the perfect post-night out spot. The menu features all the classic favourites, such as the full English, but also some more unusual dishes such as Breakfast Pizza fries and the Latin breakfast. Portland Sq 358 also serves unlimited tea and coffee.
