Smithdown Rd might bring to mind the idea of a student neighbourhood but with its growing restaurant, bar and cafe scene it is quickly becoming a foodie community. Not only are students the ones to enjoy the secret food takeover but more families and those outside of the area are making the commute to experience what’s on offer. The Smithdown Road Festival has also added to the success of the culinary scene with live music and comedy. After speaking to real students living on the famous road, here are a few of the businesses that have made their way into the hearts and stomachs of students.

Great quality and affordable is what you will find at Spitroast. Chicken lovers will rejoice at the independent restaurant that has been open on Smithdown Rd for over four years. It has been rumoured some have said the chicken is better than Nando’s. The halloumi fries, green Thai curry, ramen noodles and wraps are also pretty good too. Offering both eating in and takeaway options is their way of providing local produce to the local community. Their pledge to use free-range poultry, organic, fresh and nutritious produce is one held closely to their cookery hearts. You can also find Spitroast in other locations such as Crosby.

Full menus, bookings and FAQs are available on their website.

Tiny Rick’s

The famous Tiny Rick’s is one of a kind in the country, as it serves primarily cereals from across the world. Board game enthusiasts can also enjoy this little cafe even more from their inspired collection of over 300 board games. The regular size bowls cost £5 but if that is not enough to fill you up, customers can opt for the small bowls at £4 or the extra large bowl for £7.

Naked Lunch

For a strong coffee and fresh food visit Naked Lunch, this independent cafe is striving to build a community in Liverpool through good food. Their tapas menu includes Stornoway Fritters, Fresh Salmon Fish Cakes, Spicy Chicken Wings, Pork Belly Bites and Vegan Aubergine Moussaka. They also serve Sunday roast including a vegan nut roast or a chicken or beef roast with all the trimmings. Not only do they serve exceptional quality food, but there is quality entertainment with live music from local and international artists performing in the cosy cafe setting.

The new addition to Smithdown Rd is the bistro and bar Belzan. Although this place may be little, it is making a big noise with an impressive review from the Guardian which can be read by the clicking here.  Serving simple but flavoursome and seasonal foods using local ingredients, this place is a must visit especially if you only live around the corner. This bistro is an exciting addition to the Smithdown scene. Booking is recommended as the location is fairly small and is the only way to avoid disappointment. There are also vegan and gluten options available.

This American-style restaurant is the perfect place to visit especially if you are nursing a hangover or fancy a well-deserved celebration. Burgers are a staple dish on every menu across Liverpool, but what makes this place so special is the inventive creations that include a whole host of ingredients. Their signature burgers include fully loaded, ridiculous, big bird, portabello, wrecky breaky and boombatseak.
