The Sphinx: In Conversation with Jon Snow

‘I have a theory’ wrote Hunter S. Thompson, ‘that the truth is never told during the 9-5 hours.’ One wonders what Thompson would have to say of the current situation the Western World finds itself in, stuck in the middle of the furious ‘post-truth’ maelstrom. For what it’s worth, though, Channel 4 News doesn’t get on the telly until 7PM, so must surely be given the benefit of the doubt. It’s curious that at the time it has become fashionable to decry the prevalence of ‘old white men’ in our society, of the many treasures to stand out in...

Vote Leave on Thursday.

If you’ve already made up your mind which way to vote in tomorrow’s referendum, you might as well give this a miss. Italy are playing Ireland tonight and, frankly, that’s a far better use of your time. But, for the rest of you.. I read Paul Mason’s Leftwing case for Brexit a couple of days a go, and must say I found it a thoroughly enjoyable character assassination. If you haven’t already, I would advise you to do so, for the opening sentences could not be clearer: “The EU is not – and cannot become – a democracy.” In fact, I...

Guild elections: Something slanderous this way comes…

The Sphinx’s perpetually grumpy editor gives his two cents on another SRO campaign… Before we get into the gritty details of the people who have been parading themselves up and down in front of you in a desperate, clawing bid to stay in Liverpool for an extra year, take a second to check out how many of them there are. Go on, have a count. Nineteen. Nineteen lunatics ran to be your Guild President. I mean, we’re told often enough how competitive the market is for graduate positions, but really? That many people wanted Alex Ferguson’s job? Look at...

Liverpool ‘amber’ in university free speech rankings

The University of Liverpool and the Liverpool Guild of Students have both been classified as ‘Amber’ in online magazine Spiked’s 2016 Free Speech University Rankings. The announcement comes just days after both bodies de-ratified the university medical society, the LMSS. No mention of that decision is made in the online guide, though the 2014 suspension of the society in the wake of the infamous ‘Smokergate’ incident is included as a contributing factor. The LMSS have not commented on the result. This is the second year that Spiked has published these rankings, and it describes the University and the Guild...

A Scalpel in the Dark

It speaks volumes that the two articles already published by the Sphinx on the subject of the LMSS have been done so anonymously. In the email circulated to students of the medical school by the vice chancellor and the chairman of the Guild of Students, ‘employability’ and ‘good names’ take centre stage in the explanation for the blackballing of a society older than the university itself; a society which has ‘failed to keep pace with the views and expectations of the modern world’, and ‘perpetuate[d]… attitudes which are no longer seen as acceptable in the modern medical profession.’ Not just the...
